National Slate Museum site tour

An exciting opportunity to see conservation in action as the National Slate Museum undergoes a significant redevelopment project.

Join the IHBC Wales branch, accompanied by conservation architect Elinor Gray-Williams and contractor MPH for a tour of conservation works at the National Slate Museum as it undergoes significant redevelopment works. We will explore how decisions have been made to balance the conservation of the 19th Century workshops, several of which still contain historic machinery and tools, with telling the story of the international slate industry. Discussions will include how the project has developed with the input of historic environment professionals to take full account of the site's grade 1 listing, scheduled monument status, and inclusion in the World Heritage Site.

The tour will take place on a live site. Participants must wear sturdy site boots. High vis and hard hats will be available to borrow but feel free to bring your own.

Welsh Government Historic Environment Group

The Welsh Ministers established this high-level forum to take a strategic overview of issues and opportunities in the historic environment — including climate change, skills and the economic value of the historic environment — and promote common approaches to address these. The group is made up of representatives from the major organisations in Wales with historic environment interests, including the IHBC, and meets approximately quarterly. Cadw has an executive role and is part of the Welsh Government’s Arts and Sport Department answerable to the Deputy Minister, Dawn Bowden MS.
