The Garden City: Origins and Landmarks
The three iconic pioneer Garden City style
communities I have shown are all managed as
Conservation Areas by the local authorities, and
also under the ground landlord powers of the
original developers. This has made them very
desirable places to live in, and has priced out the
families of modest income who were their
original residents. It is difficult to see how this
could now be reversed, and remains an
unintended consequence of the attractiveness of
Howard’s original concept. The same is also
apparent in the local authority Council estates
and state sponsored New Towns.
