South East but work throughout the UK
East Sussex ( also County Down, NI)
Murphy Associates is a specialist consultancy offering advice on planning, urban design and the historic environment as well as aspects of planning law. With these specialisms we are able to offer a service from feasibility through to the submissions of applications with the appropriate supporting planning, design and access and heritage statements and where required, through to appeal including acting as an expert witness at public enquiries.
On heritage matters our work involves documentary research to understand heritage assets including historic areas, designated listed buildings and locally listed buildings, inspections and recording, townscape and site appraisals, the role of setting, conservation area appraisals and village character statements. Our projects range from single buildings to major developments in sensitive settings.
We work through out the UK and engage with other consultants and specialists providing advice to private individuals, local authorities and developers and have continued the work of The Conservation Studio.
Project 1
Blueboys Inn, Pembury -Murphy Associates
Provided advice on planning law as it
related to the building before and after
listing. We also carried out an assessment of the building to ascertain the significane of the surviving structure - work had
started with an extant permission to demolish the building but it was listed
within a matter of days. This outcome of the statement of significance assisted in moving the project forward and ensuring the remaining significant parts of the
building were retained.
Project 2
Hareplain Barn, Hareplain Road, Biddenden
Working with the agent and a structural engineer, we produced a compelling case to ensure the future survival of a listed barn and at the same time provided a
sustainable home in the countryside. Oyr
research set out the historic evolution of
the important farmstead that the barn
formed part of. We also demonstrated that changes in farming had an impact on the
subdivision of the farmyard. Along with an assessment of the historic timber frame, we ensured that the barn, comprising the roof was of one origin - a former house and that there were other medieval and post
medieval domestic elements throughout the building and appropriate repairs to
surviving wattle and daub as well
helioflexes and marian markings.
Project 3
Sandgates Nurseries, Henfleld
Murphy
Assocaites acted as the Heritage Expert
Witness at a Public Inquiry for Horsham
District against a development of 72
houses within and affecting the setting of a listed building. The Appeal was recovered and duly dismissed by the Secretary of
State. The Inspector and Secretary of Stage agreed with the Expert Witness' evidence
that the setting of the listed building would not be preserved or enhanced.
