 Hodsock Priory

Soul Architects were appointed to refurbish the north wing of the property which had been previously converted to three separate flats almost forty years earlier. The project was split into two phases. phase one providing a new estates office over two floors and phase two extends the families existing living accommodation.

Phase one was completed in spring 2010. Two new openings were formed in the principle elevation with stone surrounds to match the existing. The existing diaper work was carefully adjusted around the new openings. Existing windows previously adapted or blocked up were carefully restored to match the existing. Internally the existing narrow stair was removed and we designed a new bespoke spiral stair in steel with oak handrail and treads to give access to the first floor office space. The brief also included the design of internal furniture, which included cupboards and shelves for file storage, a small kitchen and panelling to the entrance hall.

Phase two is expected to commence in 2012.

Causey Hall

Soul Architects were appointed to develop a scheme for the lower ground floor and the two wings to the rear of this Gothic revival style Hall. The design provides a flexible range of offices over three floors all serviced by a centrally located communal kitchens and toilets.

A key consideration of the design on this split level site was the need for level access throughout and this was carefully implemented where the parameters of the existing building allowed, with gentle ramps and an internal platform lift. Externally the scheme included the refurbishment and renewal of the metal railings and walkways to provide level access to the two wings.

The conditions of the planning permission required both an archaeological photographic survey and watching brief, both of which were integrated into the contractors programme to provide access to the building at key stages.
