YORK CENTRE FOR CONSERVATION ALUMNI
‘Adapt and Conserve: Climate Change and
the Historic Environment’

July 3rd and 4th, 2009
Kings Manor, York
|
This year’s conference will address the subject of climate
change and the historic environment.
The earth’s climate has changed throughout time as a result of natural
processes, but there is now a growing consensus that current climate change has
been brought about by man-made actions. But what does this mean for the historic
environment and is it something that can provoke creative responses which
enhance how we use the past in the present?

DEVELOPING IN CONTEXT
Part of the NLA Conservation series in July
Tuesday 28 July
NLA, The Building Centre
26 Store Street, London WC1E 7BT |
In spite of the downturn, conflicts between development
and conservation continue to make the headlines. How do we provide accommodation
for business in sensitive areas, how do we improve outdated housing stock which
is no longer fit for purpose even though it is by significant architects, how do
we fund the conservation of buildings whose use has disappeared? We will look at
the overall context of conservation in relation to Mayoral and English Heritage
policies and look at some specific projects where designers have steered the
difficult course through these issues.

Quality of Life Debates
3- 10 September 2009
Royal Geographical Society, Ondaatje Theatre
|
The current economic crisis gives us all an opportunity to
rethink our priorities. What really matters in life? The endless round of
getting and spending, or less tangible things - spending time with friends and
family, a walk in the countryside, admiring something beautiful? The National
Trust 'Quality of Life' Debates, in conjunction with Intelligence², aim to
stimulate people to think about their deepest values - the kind that are
frequently ignored in conventional political debate.

Since 1997 the Historic Buildings and Conservation team at
Essex County Council have run a series of one, two or three day hands-on courses
in traditional building skills. The courses aim to address the declining numbers
of people trained in traditional craft skills and to raise awareness of the
importance of protecting our historic buildings by using the appropriate methods
and materials to repair and conserve them.
The courses are run from our workshop at Cressing Temple but where possible we
use live sites throughout the county. Our tutors are all excellent craftsmen who
run their own businesses using their skills every day, and have a wealth of
