been specified while the external structure is partially dismantled to allow the rusty components to be either repaired and treated or replaced. We felt itnecessarythatthe externaltimberframe should be fully exposed so that it can be inspected and treated or replaced.
When one deals with conservatories, one understands the Meccano-like form of construction and it is comparatively easy to take down and replace or fix on new elements.
Work is just commencing on site and we have specffiedthatwe shouldinspect all the ironwork and timber frame as it is exposed so that decisions can be made about how to deal with each of the component parts. Once we have dismantled the first section, we wifi be abletolookatthedetailingtoseewhether we can improve the present protection from the elements. We have specified that all the ironwork shall be grit blasted to SA 2.5 and two coats of zinc-rich paint applied with a chlorinate rubber finish; a specification that we have used in the past very satisfactorily. As far as the grit blasting is concerned, this is initiallyto be carriedout ‘softly’ to see thatnoparticular harm is being done, particularly to the finer details, before the final finish specification is agreed.

will be investigatedfurtheraflercleaning off the paint, but we have specified that these be stitch-welded which is a comparatively easy operation.
Where it is necessary to replace cast iron elements, it is not a particularly expensive exercise because we will have the original castings to form anynecessary moulds.

I hope this article will give some encouragement to Conservation Officers who look at conservatories. I have yet to find a conservatory which cannot be repaired, assuming that the basic structural elements exist.
